Blue Page

I pulled blue through her curls
thick dye stained the rims of my fingernails
on the barbershop floor, blue stains swallowed

By dustpan teeth, there is a recipe:
to write on the blue page , you must use the blue pen
to use the blue pen, you must boil the blue page down to a thick paste
it stains the fingernail rim and you must feed it

To the cavities where blue beats, there is no science
veins crisscross like curling ribbon, heartstrings all knotted
It’s easy to ignore in a room of red.
but listen: blue, blue, blue

She hummed in the shower until the water ran clear
sang the blues right out of those curls
thick dye knotting itself back into paper

I bit my fingernail rim
and up came red
