Pea Plants

In classroom windows
there are pea plants taped to the glass
carrying the morning
all its fog and mildew
warm in their stomachs
roots turning their noses up
knotting and knotting in fetal position

Tape me to the window
let the light wake me on its own
while I grow in stages
the knots and knots
mixed into my shoelaces

I want to pack up everything I own
roll pie crust over it
sit by the oven writing overdue letters
until it all turns into something else
somebody else’s eyelashes on my nose
I want to untangle the roots
of everyone around me
but today
it was hard enough to get my shoes on

Behind my bedroom window
a heater growls into the squint
I am carrying the morning
all its fog and mildew
warm in my stomach
I am knotting and knotting
in fetal position
a pie tin of letters
burnt on the windowsill

{Teach me to untie things
I’ll show you how to cling
let’s slide off of this window
and find out how to sing }
